Ballantrae - South Ayrshire

Ballantrae is a pretty coastal village just 13 miles south of Girvan. The Ayrshire Coastal Path passes through the village and there are plenty of other local walks nearby. Overlooked by the ruins of the late medieval Ardstinchar Castle, the village offers a selection of shops, a garage, supermarket and the popular Craigiemains Home and Garden Centre. Here you will find a coffee shop, gift shop, children’s play area, miniature train, farm shop and Visitor Information Point.

Fishing in the local area

If you are looking for a holiday location with fishing opportunities. The Stinchar is one of the most productive of the Ayrshire salmon rivers and it has some excellent fly water. Salmon & sea trout season runs from 25th Feb to 31st Oct and the brown trout season from 15th March to 6th Oct. There are many other rivers, lochs and commercial fisheries, there are also several companies offering  sea fishing boat trips.

Golf Courses

Scotland has a rich history of golf and there are several local golf courses including Girvan and Stranraer. For the more adventurous, Ayrshire is home to four championship golf courses Royal Troon, Prestwick, Western Gailes, and Turnberry. Whatever level you’re your handicap is, we guarantee that you will find somewhere to practice your swing, eat, drink, socialise and enjoy the spectacular local landscapes.

Visit Ailsa Craig

Ailsa Craig lies 10 miles off the coast and rises to 1100 ft above sea-level. It is believed to be a “plug” left behind from an extinct volcano. The island is home to a ruined castle, a small cottage, a lighthouse and a granite quarry where the curling stones come from. Home to one of the largest gannet colonies in the world It is a bustling seabird city, with puffins, black guillemots, razorbills and peregrines.

ExPLORE THE FAMOUS CAVES

The coastline near Whilk Meadow Caravan Park is peppered with famous caves to explore including Snib’s Cave, which was home to Snib Scott for over 30 years. Further up the A77 you can find the more sinister Bennane Cave, said to be the home of the 15th century cannibal Sawney Bean. While some believe this to be just a story and others believe it to be true, it is still definitely worth a visit!
